Tris » Beatrice PriorTris is the main character and narrator of the Divergent series. She is described as being very short and not beautiful. She has blonde hair framed around her face and blue eyes. Tris is 16 years old and is the youngest child of Andrew and Natalie Prior. She has an older brother named Caleb. During the aptitude test, she learns that she is Divergent, something that is extremely dangerous. Later in the book, she learns that Divergent means a class of individuals who are not suited for one faction, but who show traits of several factions. After much struggle, she chooses to be a Dauntless initiate. While training, Tris gets three tattoos, three ravens above her collarbone, representing her three family members that she left behind, the Abnegation symbol on one shoulder, and the Dauntless one on the other. Tris is very stubborn and also tough. She is quite thin and weak, but becomes muscular during training as a Dauntless initiate.
Four » Tobias EatonFour is Tris' instructor and love interest. Unlike Tris, he is tall and has short dark hair and beautiful deep blue eyes. He is two years older than Tris and originally came from the same faction as she did, Abnegation. He ran from Abnegation into Dauntless to escape his physically abusive father, Marcus. He protects Tris from the others both by defending her when she is attacked, and by keeping their romance private so the other initiates will not think Tris' rank is a result of favouritism. "Four" is a nickname given in his first stage of initiation by his fellow initiation class and instructors when he had only four fears to face. He also has an antagonistic relationship with Eric, a Dauntless leader, who is corrupting the Dauntless philosophy. In one of the final chapters of the book, Tris learns that Tobias is also Divergent. At the end of Divergent Tobias also reveals that he has fallen in love with Tris.
RelationshipFrom when she first meets Tobias, then known as Four, Tris automatically takes a liking to him. She is unaware that the feeling is love or attraction; she is just drawn to him naturally. However, she starts to become more and more aware of her growing feelings towards her instructor. She was never afraid to stand up to him or tell him off. When she and Tobias start a relationship, she is worried that he does not actually love her, and that he just wants to use her, because she believes she is not pretty and draws no interest from anyone whatsoever. She is also aware of the two year age gap between them, which he laughs at, saying 'Yes, that whopping two year gap really is insurmountable!' In her fear landscapes, it is revealed that Tris has a fear of intimacy, and is reluctant to tell Four when he presses her. She believed as Tobias was older, he would have certain expectations of her and she was not ready for it; however this assumption was proven untrue.
In Divergent, Four first meets Tris, formerly known as Beatrice, when she is the first transfer initiate to jump off a building into the net in the Dauntless entrance on the day of her Choosing Ceremony. It becomes evident very quickly that Four has some sort of feelings for Tris when he walks out of the training room when Tris is unfairly paired up to fight with fellow initiate Peter who is much stronger than her. In addition, on the night of the capture the flag game, Four accompanies Tris as she climbs up the ferris wheel so he can be sure that she is not hurt even though one of his only fears is heights. Four continuely tries to help Tris through her Dauntless training, and she begins to develop feelings for him as they interact with each other. Eventually they become a couple, and Four is adamant that he will protect Tris no matter what the cost is to him.
